"Pollinate: Monarch Butterfly" is an original watercolor painting by Victoria K. Chapman. This delightfully colorful series of paintings called "Pollinate" features 7 different critters who are native or naturalized to New England in the United States and pollinate our flowers and trees. These beneficial birds and insects are an integral part of the native ecosystem and our agricultural systems. This series pays homage to these tiny wonders and their environments.
"Pollinate: Monarch Butterfly" depicts one of the more famous and well-loved butterflies of the United States. The orange and black wings of the Monarch Butterfly make this beautiful insect easily recognizable. The Monarchs are threatened with environmental changes during their yearly migrations from north to south. Their young caterpillar's primary food source is native milkweed, shown in this painting. The butterflies are attracted to the rounded purple flower blooms, and then lay their eggs on the leaves. In the early fall, the new caterpillars hatch and then turn into beautiful green chrysalises. When they hatch, the butterflies prepare for their long journey to Mexico for the winter. When you see milkweed, remember our Monarch friends. Keep it in your garden to help these important friends.
For each sale from this series, the artist will donate 10% of proceeds to a local environmental charity of the artist's choice (eg: Greater Worcester Land Trust or Kestrel Land Trust).
